What’s Happening at the Paxton
We would like to welcome our new neighbors on the 9th Floor to The Paxton. We have been very busy and only nine residences remain. The First Annual Paxton Golf Tournament was held in September. Everyone enjoyed the afternoon of golfing…well, almost all of us! The Paxton Women’s Book Club had its first meeting in September with a very successful turnout of nearly 20 residents. The meetings have been a lot of fun and provide another opportunity for everyone to meet their neighbors. We would like to thank the committee members of the book club for organizing these events.
Barbara Stone, a resident of The Paxton, had the opportunity to be an Alumni Conductor with The University of Alabama Marching Band. The band performed during half time of the Alabama v. Kentucky Football game on October 4, 2008. Check back next month for photos of The Paxton Halloween Party! Downtown Cleans Up!The Downtown Improvement District (DID), established in 2007, is working hard at cleaning up Downtown. The DID is partnering with the Nebraska State Recycling Association on a Downtown Recycling Program. The program will place small bins for mixed use recycling and will encourage companies to implement recycling for their employees. The DID has hired Goodwill Industries to clean up sidewalks, power wash bus shelters and service trash receptacles and the new cigarette dispensers to help cut back cigarette litter. The DID is also working on creating a greener and more beautiful downtown. They are removing dead and dying trees and replacing them with new ones, with funding from the state, the city and OPPD. The first block to be completed is near the State Office Building at 13th & Farnam. DID has also put in new street lighting on lower poles to make it more pedestrian friendly. Holiday Lights FestivalThe Holiday Lights Festival, which officially kicks off with the Thanksgiving night tree lighting ceremony, is a seven-week-long celebration of the season in Downtown Omaha. Downtown Omaha Inc. and the Mayor’s Office have co-produced this event since 2000. Some of the annual events include the Holiday Skating Extravaganza, a Holiday Concert, a holiday play, stagecoach rides, an ice sculpture exhibit and a Holiday Living Tour. Last year’s Living Tour provided tour guests a view of downtown living during the Holiday Season. Please plan to stop by The Paxton to view the holiday decorations. For more information on the tour, visit their website at www.holidaylightsfestival.org. History! – The Loyal Hotel
As some of you are aware, the Paxton floor plans were named in honor of prominent hotels from Omaha’s past. Many have great histories. The Hotel Loyal was built in 1908. The Loyal was a four story hotel with 135 rooms. It was located at 16th and Capitol streets. It was owned by Herman Cohen head of The Greater Omaha Packing Company and named after his son Loyal. The Loyal was razed in 1976 after housing elderly for some years. The location is presently the site of The First National Tower. |
